Get Underway

“Come on, quickly,” Milo urged.

I took his hand, and he helped pull me forward as I climbed over the railing. He started to lead me in the direction opposite the parking lot.

“Wait!” I stopped him with my words. “I drove here, let’s take my car.”

He simply nodded, and we both booked it to the Cherokee in the parking lot behind the pier.

Milo jumped in the passenger side, and before his door even was shut, I peeled out of the lot.

“Where do I go?” I asked.

“Just get away from them. Go inland,” he ordered. “They must have followed me. I don’t know if they could see you from there, but they’re going to be looking.”

“How did they get here so fast?” I asked.

“The Siren’s Scorn can go under any time and rise back up somewhere else. There aren’t many limitations on a cursed ship.”

"The what?” I raised an eyebrow.

“It’s the name of the ship.”

“Oh.” I nodded. “I guess that makes sense.”

I maneuvered the car out of the beach area, driving aimlessly along the coast highway, hoping to get far away.

“If you had just listened to me, this wouldn’t be happening.” Milo clenched his jaw and shook his head.

“I realize I made a mistake, okay?” I confessed. “But I really didn’t think it would be such a big deal.”

“Does this not seem like a big deal to you?” Milo whipped his head around to me and tilted his chin, directing my attention to the gash on his face.

“W-what did they do to you?” I shuddered the words out while still trying to focus on the road.

“The captain was so kind as to give me this nice reminder before I set out to search for you, since I lost you the first time. It was supposed to remind me to be more…vigilant.”

There was a pause between us for a moment, with only the hum of the road filling the silence.

“Aren’t you scared of what he’ll do if you keep lying to him?” I asked.

“What can he do to me, exactly? Kill me?” He laughed dryly.

From the corner of my eye, I watched him hesitate before speaking again.

“I told you before. This isn’t who I wanted to be. I never asked to be part of this crew. I helped them do terrible things in life, but I’ve spent the afterlife—or whatever this in-between life is—trying to keep them from doing any more.”

“Is that why you tried to save Serena?” I asked, speaking before I thought.

If Milo had a heartbeat, he acted as though it stopped right then.

“How do you know about that?” His voice shook, reminding me of a child in trouble.

“I know her father. He works at my school. He told me to stay away from you and Bellamy.”

Milo seemed to be thinking of what to say next. “We didn’t kill her. Valdez did.”

“I know. That’s what I wanted to talk to you both about.” I added. “But I’m sure Bellamy hates me now. I called him a murderer the last time I saw him.
